Grandma always said, if the beggar on the street is cheating you, he/she would only be cheating you of a dollar or two. But, if you gave it anyway, you could have brought him/her closer to his/her next meal.
What is more important- your 2 dollars or the person's meal?
I know how some may be of the opinion that these people deserve it. After all you may say it's their drug addiction, booze, smoke or some other addiction that has driven them to such a desperate state of despair; therefore, they deserve it, after all your hand out (of 2 bucks or so, or something equivalent in kind) can't help them out of their situation, it may give them a meal today, but none tomorrow.
It is almost sad that many of us have no qualms about spending 2-bucks more for lunch, give it to a friend who is out of small change, yet, find a need to justify giving a needy person a mere 2-bucks. Has humanity amount to only so little?
Here's my 2-cents worth, we're not in a position to decide what one deserves. If each one of us were to look closely at our lives, regardless of your faith, you just might learn that like everyone else, your life also stands on grace.
